2018 Mazda 6 LA Motor Show reveal

Updated 12/03/2018

Mazda has unveiled the tourer (a.k.a. estate/wagon) version of their highly anticipated 2018 Mazda 6 update.  As with the 2018 Mazda 6 Saloon, which was unveiled last year at the LA Motor Show, the updated version, will bring a more premium and refined feel to this popular model. Although this is not a new-generation model, the refined interior, new seat design, and updated exterior design features are sure to make the 2018 Mazda 6 a stand-out in its segment.

Mazda has revealed the 2018 Mazda 6 at the LA Motor Show, marking the next step towards their ‘premium’ vision.

It was only one month ago that Mazda unveiled their Vision Coupe concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show. It represents the company’s design vision apex, and their next step towards this vision is the 2018 Mazda 6.  While this is not an entirely new model, the 2018 facelift brings a lot of the refinement and elegance that made the Vision Coupe such a hit in Tokyo.

Refined Design

The exterior design has been updated to look more in line with the all-new Mazda CX-5, most notably the new grille.  The headlights have also been subtly redesigned to include fog lights. Other updates to the exterior include paint surfaces extending lower on the body, and newly designed 17- and 19-inch alloy wheels to complement the more up-market design.

The interior has also received some refinements to give it the premium feel Mazda is aiming for.  According to the Japanese manufacturer, only the steering wheel and a few small pieces of trim have been carried across from the previous model.  The dashboard features a far more horizontal level to accentuate the Mazda 6’s width. The trim also features a range of new, more premium materials – Sen wood, Nappa leather and UltraSuede NU.  A lot of focus has been placed on improving comfort in the upgrade, and the 2018 Mazda 6 includes entirely redesigned seats, with ventilation for the front seats – a first for Mazda. The new seats are wider, with high-density, vibration-absorbing urethane foam, and are designed to complement the natural S-shaped curve of the spine.  The rear seats also have urethane foam to improve comfort.

State-of-the-art Technology

While Mazda has put a lot of effort into making sure their design language continues to evolve and compete with the more premium brands, they’ve never lost sight of the what really matters – ease of use and the pure joy of driving.  So it’s no surprise that the 2018 Mazda 6 will feature the very latest in onboard technology that Mazda has to offer. This will include 360-degree View Monitor, reconfigurable 7-inch TFT gauge display, 8-inch MZD-Connect display, Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go, windshield wiper de-icer and windshield-projected Active Driving Display head-up unit.

The SKYACTIV-Chassis has also been improved upon to offer a smoother ride without compromising on the handling.  Greater rigidity and improved suspension geometry, as well as body reinforcements and thicker metal in the rear wheel wells, have allowed Mazda to achieve this in the 2018 Mazda 6.  An added bonus of these improvements is a quieter ride.

Although the display model features a 2.5-litre SKYACTIV engine, it is unlikely that this engine will be seen in the European models. And while there has been no word from Mazda UK about plans for the 2018 Mazda 6, it is expected to hit other markets in Spring next year.
