The New Mazda 6e Revealed

The Mazda 6e is Mazda’s newly revealed all-electric mid-size vehicle, and it marks the brand’s second foray into fully electric cars after the Mazda MX-30.

Debuting at the Brussels Motor Show in January 2025, the Mazda 6e brings familiar Mazda styling and outstanding electric technology. This sleek liftback sedan offers long-range capability – up to about 343–345 miles on a charge in its extended-range version – extending the potential first introduced by the MX-30, which offered up to 124 miles WLTP.

Its eye-catching design, high-tech interior, impressive safety systems, and strong electric performance positions the Mazda 6e as an electric vehicle that appeals to current Mazda owners and newcomers alike.

Below, we explore the Mazda 6e’s exterior and interior design, battery and performance specs, in-car technology, and safety features in detail.

Exterior Design

Mazda has infused the 6e with its “Kodo – Soul of Motion” design philosophy, adapting it to an electric era. The result is a sleek, coupe-like silhouette with smooth, flowing lines and details emphasising sporty sophistication. Key exterior features include:

  • Frameless doors and flush handles: The 6e uses frameless side windows and integrated door handles that sit flush with the body, giving a clean, modern look.
  • Illuminated grille with signature lighting: At the front, a glowing signature wing light surrounds the grille area, serving as a unique lighting element that also shows charging status while the car is plugged in.
  • Aerodynamic wheels and sleek profile: The Mazda 6e rides on 19-inch alloy wheels with a sporty five-spoke design. Its dimensions (4,921 mm long, 1,890 mm wide) and long wheelbase (2,895 mm) give it a low stance.
  • Distinctive rear with spoiler: The rear of the 6e has slim horizontal LED taillights and “Mazda” lettering in place of the traditional round logo – a contemporary touch that is also seen on recent Mazda models.

The look is a nod to the previous Mazda6 (the beloved petrol/diesel saloon) yet thoroughly modernised for the EV age.

Interior Design and Comfort

Inside, the Mazda 6e features a minimalist, high-tech cabin with spacious seating and premium materials. It’s inspired by the Japanese concept of “Ma”, which values open space and simplicity, which translates into an uncluttered and straightforward dashboard, plenty of room for passengers and a calming atmosphere. Key interior highlights include:

  • Spacious layout: Thanks to the car’s generous dimensions and clever design, the 6e provides plenty of headroom and legroom for five passengers. A panoramic glass roof (standard on higher trims) provides the cabin with plenty of light. The front seats have a slim, integrated headrest design, and rear passengers even get their own small touchscreen to adjust climate and sunblinds for added comfort.
  • Premium materials and trims: Depending on trim level, the seats are upholstered in high-quality artificial leather or plush Nappa leather with suede accents on the top-line “Takumi Plus” models.
  • Minimalist dashboard with digital displays: The 6e’s dashboard features a clean design with minimal physical buttons. It includes a 10.2-inch digital driver display, a 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with touch, voice and gesture controls, and an augmented reality head-up display projecting key info onto the windscreen.
  • Practical storage: The rear boot offers 330 litres of space (around 700 litres with seats folded), and a 70-litre front trunk adds extra room for cables or small items. Additional storage compartments and a roomy centre console support everyday needs.

Battery Charging and Performance

Mazda offers the 6e with two battery options, catering to different needs. Both variants are rear-wheel drive (unlike the old front-wheel-drive Mazda6), delivering the sporty driving dynamics Mazda is known for, with a perfect 50:50 weight distribution for balanced handling. Here’s an overview of the powertrain choices:

  • Standard Battery (68.8kWh LFP): Offers 297–300 miles (WLTP) of range. The single rear motor delivers 254–258 PS (187 kW) and 320 Nm of torque, achieving 0–62 mph in around 7.6 seconds with a top speed of ~109 mph. Charging from 10–80% takes about 22 minutes with 200 kW DC fast charging, or 8 hours via 11 kW AC.
  • Long-Range Battery (80kWh NCM): Extends range to 343–345 miles (WLTP). Power is slightly reduced at 244–245 PS (180 kW), but torque remains 320 Nm. 0–62 mph takes ~7.8 seconds. DC fast charging peaks at 95 kW (~45 mins for 10–80%), and 11 kW AC charging takes around 9–9.5 hours.

Advanced In-Car Technology

The Mazda 6e features a “smart cabin”. It offers voice, touch, and gesture controls for a user-friendly experience.

At its centre is a 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, supporting smartphone-like touch gestures and is expected to offer wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It is also accompanied by a 10.2-inch digital driver display and an augmented reality head-up display projecting key info onto the windscreen.

Running the latest Mazda Connect software, the system includes EV-specific tools like charge monitoring, voice and gesture controls, and over-the-air updates. There’s also a wireless phone charging pad and multiple USB-C ports.

Comfort and audio tech include a Sony-tuned 12 or 14-speaker sound system, multi-zone climate control with rear touchscreen, heated and ventilated seats, and ambient lighting. Driver aids like adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition are also onboard.

Safety and Driver Assistance Systems

The Mazda 6e is engineered for a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating and comes with a full suite of standard features to protect and assist occupants.

It includes nine airbags throughout the cabin, including a driver’s knee airbag, and the i-Activsense system with key functions such as:

  • Autonomous Emergency Braking
  • Lane Departure Warning & Lane-Keeping Assist
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Rear Collision Warning
  • Blind Spot Monitoring

Advanced sensors (cameras, radar and ultrasound) support adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, parking assist, and emergency interventions like auto braking or steering.

An occupancy alert system checks for passengers or pets left in the rear seats, issuing warnings if needed. Structurally, the 6e features reinforced crash zones and a low centre of gravity for enhanced stability. Co-developed with Changan, the 6e meets strict European safety standards.

Together, these systems provide a balanced mix of protection and driver support, reflecting Mazda’s approach to safety and usability.

Conclusion

The Mazda 6e marks a major step in Mazda’s transition to electric, reviving the Mazda6 name with a modern, long-range EV that stays true to the brand’s driving philosophy. The 6e delivers the performance, range and practicality many drivers expect, making it a serious contender for everyday and long-distance use.

With its fastback saloon design, rear-wheel drive setup and refined interior, the 6e appeals to drivers who value style, comfort and engagement behind the wheel.

It’s expected to arrive in the UK in 2026, with pricing likely starting price around £40,000. Mazda will offer at least two trim levels (Takumi and Takumi Plus), with a range of colours and options to choose from.

For Mazda fans and new EV buyers, the Mazda 6e offers a well-balanced combination of efficiency, innovation and character, carrying Mazda’s ‘Joy of Driving’ into the electric era.
