KGM Introduces New Dual Tech Hybrid Powertrain

KGM has launched its Dual Tech Hybrid powertrain, now available in the Torres Hybrid and Actyon Hybrid. This advanced hybrid system utilises a petrol engine and electric motors to deliver a driving experience that feels remarkably close to a full electric vehicle while maintaining the practicality, range and capability you expect from a KGM SUV.

Developed in partnership with BYD, a global leader in electric vehicle technology, the Dual Tech Hybrid system represents a significant step forward in KGM’s strategy to enhance its electric vehicle experience. In this article we will cover everything you need to know about this new dual tech hybrid powertrain.

How The Dual Tech Hybrid System Works

At the heart of the system is a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine working alongside an advanced e-DHT (electrified Dual Hybrid Transmission) and dual motors. The engine has been specifically designed for hybrid operation, using Miller-cycle technology that reduces the compression intensity of the air-fuel mixture, which allows the engine to run at a more efficient rate. A variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) mitigates turbo lag by changing its shape to maximise efficiency at different speeds; you get the quick response of a small turbo and the power of a big one.

The petrol engine produces 149.6PS and 220Nm of torque, but rather than always driving the wheels directly, it frequently operates as a high-efficiency generator. This generates electrical energy that can either be stored in the battery or used directly by the electric motors, allowing the system to deliver power as efficiently as possible.

The main drive comes from a powerful 130kW electric motor positioned close to the driveshaft for instant torque. This motor delivers 177PS and 300Nm of torque, providing the smooth, linear acceleration typical of electric vehicles.

Intelligent Power Management

The Dual Tech Hybrid system automatically switches between nine different operating modes depending on driving conditions. These include pure EV mode, series hybrid operation where the engine acts as a generator, parallel hybrid mode where engine and motors work together and direct engine drive for motorway cruising.

You don’t need to manage this manually as the system constantly selects the most efficient mode. The powertrain adapts seamlessly whether you’re navigating city traffic, cruising on the motorway or tackling hilly routes.

An energy flow diagram in the instrument cluster shows in real time which mode the vehicle is using and how energy is flowing between the engine, motors and battery.

Electric-Only Driving Capability

Both the Torres Hybrid and Actyon Hybrid can drive in pure electric mode up to 62mph. This creates a near-silent cabin with instant torque and smooth acceleration, making them ideal for city driving.

The system is equipped with a 1.83kWh hybrid battery, paired with a lightweight 12V LFP low-voltage system. This combination helps to maximise the time spent in electric-only mode while keeping the overall vehicle weight down.

Regenerative Braking

The hybrid system includes an adjustable regenerative braking system with three levels of deceleration. You can choose between a lighter, more conventional feel or stronger braking that maximises energy recovery.

When Smart Regenerative Braking is activated, the system automatically adjusts the level of deceleration based on the distance to the vehicle ahead, making stop-start traffic smoother while capturing as much energy as possible.

Refined To Be Quiet

Both models also feature extensive sound-absorbing materials throughout the structure and cabin to minimise engine and road noise. Smart frequency dampers have been applied to the shock absorbers, improving body control over uneven surfaces and providing a more stable, comfortable ride across different speeds and road conditions.
