Mazda 5 Review

The Mazda 5 compact people carrier combines space and flexibility with dynamic styling and a sporty character rarely seen in an MPV.

With a versatile ‘Karakuri’ folding seat system offering a unique 6+1 layout in an amazing 42 different configurations, flexibility is definitely one of the Mazda5’s strong points.

There is a vast 1485 litres of boot space with the seats down, including the innovative second row seat storage compartment, proving Mazda 5’s interior is cavernous despite its compact and sporty proportions. Meanwhile, thanks to the innovative twin rear electric sliding doors, access to the Mazda 5’s interior is effortlessly simple.

With its punchy range of engines, the Mazda 5 proves MPVs don’t have to be boring though. Returning over 64mpg yet producing only 138g/km CO2 in a car capable of carrying seven, the 115hp 1.6-litre diesel Sport diesel is frugal and fun – and with Mazda’s engineers calling on its sporting heritage, the Mazda 5 is fun to drive.

1.8-litre or 148hp 2.0-litre petrol engines are also available, the latter fitted with Mazda's clever istop fuel-saving system which automatically switches the engine off at junctions or traffic lights, restarting it again instantly when the driver wants to get going again.

As with the Mazda MX-5, the Japanese engineers' attention to detail is excellent. Now with a revised air intake and resculpted bonnet, the Mazda 5’s improved aerodynamics along with enhanced roof insulation give excellent levels of refinement. Headturning sporty looks, full leather interior, power-sliding doors and sat-nav also make an appearance on the top of the range Sport Nav spec.

Coming in four trim levels, all models are equipped with air conditioning and Mazda’s usual high level of safety equipment as standard, including ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), plus Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with Traction Control. Reassuringly, the Mazda5 receives a five star Euro NCAP safety rating. A three-year warranty comes with all Mazda5 as well.

The Mazda 5 throws compromise out of the window and delivers flexibility and performance in abundance. Check out the full range at T W White & Sons today.
